Killen Waterfall, Ballina, New South Wales, Australia for Water H2O ThursdayThis marks the third occasion I have journeyed to this region for a locum assignment. The town of Lismore, regrettably, has endured over four significant floods in the past five years—an affliction both tragic and wearying for its long-suffering residents. The resilience of the community in the face of such repeated devastation is both humbling and poignant. During a recent excursion, I found myself driving through the scenic environs near Killen Falls—a natural gem nestled within the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. This waterfall, which cascades picturesquely over a basalt cliff into a serene swimming hole below, lies within the Emigrant Creek catchment area. Historically, it is believed to have held significance for the Bundjalung people, the traditional custodians of the land. Today, it remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering a tranquil retreat into nature. While attempting to reverse my vehicle from a designated parking area near the falls, an unfortunate incident occurred. Another driver, without due caution, flung open a car door just as I was backing out, resulting in a minor scratch—approximately three centimetres in length. The mother of the other party responded with considerable agitation, adamantly insisting the fault was mine, despite the circumstances suggesting shared responsibility. Her reaction struck me as emblematic of a broader cultural shift—one marked, at times, by entitlement and a refusal to engage in measured discourse. Though a trifling matter in the grander scheme, the episode served as a small reflection on the tensions that can emerge even in places of great natural beauty and peace.
